Osteoporosis
, literally means “porous bones,“ which
describes how porous the bone looks like under the
microscope .
Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to
an increased risk of fracture, because the bone
becomes more brittle.
Osteoporosis affects 28 million Americans, 80 % of
whom are women.
One in two women over age 50 will have an osteo-
porosis-related fracture in her lifetime.
Women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass
in the five to seven years following menopause, put-
ting them at risk for osteoporosis.
