The term
Stenosis
itself is derived from the Greek word
stenos
, which means narrow. A narrowing of the spinal
canal can lead to neural compression, producing shooting
pain, weakness, or neurological deficits
Decompressive surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis is done
to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or the nerve roots.
During surgery, overgrown and excess bone and ligaments
are removed or adjusted. When successful, surgery enlarg-
es the spinal canal and relieves pressure on the nerves.
This can help reduce pain and numbness while improving
the strength in your legs.
Surgical candidates have....
* Severe symptoms of pain, numbness, or weakness in the
legs that restricts normal daily activities and quality of life.
* Are in otherwise good health
* Interested in returning to activities, improving their quality
of life and restoring their function
